The War

In this project you will be asked to create a website that will show the "news" of World War II using 21st century methods. Today we have near instantaneous forms of communication using YouTube, texting, social media, and 24 hour news stations. Durring World War II they did not have these modern conveniences but communication was making it possible to reach more people with news faster than ever before.

Your job will be to role play a correspondent whose job it is to report to the "folks back home" not only the major news from the warfront but also how those stories impacted the folks back home. In order to do this you will need to conduct a level of research into what kind of news was reported at the time.

Areas for you to research:
  • Hard news, including battle information, related maps and photos, with an emphasis on how the war affected those on the home front, similar to the reports that Al McIntosh made during the war years.
  • How the war impacted sports of the day (both professional and amateur).
  • “House and home” stories about how the war affected the wives and children of servicemen (this might also be an opportunity for students to research stories about recipes during a period of rationing, or stories dealing with clothing shortages).
  • Movie and entertainment stories, with an emphasis on the impact of the war.
  • Advertisements and prices of goods, and how the war affected the availability of those goods.
  • Editorials relating to a controversial aspect of the war, such as censorship.

After the research is complete you will create a website using Wikispaces. 1 member of each group will need to create the wiki. Once the wiki is created you will need to add the group members to the page. You will then create a WWII news wiki. The wikis will need to include 3 "news" stories including 1 from the home front. Maps, diagrams, or pictures must be included with each article. The site must also contain an editorial. Advertisements should also be included on the site. Please make sure they are proper for the time period.

While there is substantial information on the internet about World War II, you are the reporters, photographers, and editors, and the copy for the website should written in you own words. Each site shall include a works cited page.

To get you started a resources page has been established. Please click here. Remember you can also research on your own. Don't be afraid to use a search engine and look outside of the resources provided.
